Adding recently promoted quality images?
At Commons:Quality Images we have around 100 photos being promoted every day: could we highlight these on the main page? I can set up a bot script that will auto-update a list of selected images to show, perhaps on an hourly basis, and I've set up a demo of how it could look like at User:Mike Peel/Main Page. Thoughts? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:03, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support This is a great idea, Mike. One thing I miss in Commons is to make great images more relevant and visible, so we can attract more photographers. I would add a link to the Quality Images section, so people know that this exists. Theklan (talk) 09:07, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support I also support this. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 10:50, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel, I don't oppose but this creates a lot more space towards right bottom on my screen. Currently it is meagre and I don't worry - is there a solution? Perhaps move Participating part around? ─ Aafī (talk) 12:58, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Moved over to the right in the demo, does that look better? I think there needs to be a more general refresh of the homepage, including reducing text, but that's a topic for another day. ;-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

- Support, this looks great and it will be really nice to have more frequently updating content. But agree it might be sensible to move the Participating section to the right column for balance, especially for when we don't have something like WLE running. the wub "?!" 13:48, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

- Support It's long overdue to make the Main page more interesting and lively. However, I oppose only new quality images being featured which biases it toward recently promoted images and excludes previous ones while not making use of other things that could be used to identify high-quality images to show there. Also it would be nice if it was changing the image every few seconds with there being a pause button as well as slideshow buttons. Please make it show the subject (as on Commons:Quality images) with a link to the relevant category for every image (it could be shown on hover like the file-title). Prototyperspective (talk) 22:26, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective: I have in mind a practical way to implement this while QICbot does the work of promoting the new quality images, and changing things every hour is feasible. I have no idea how to include all quality images ever, nor how to update them here every few seconds. If you do know how to do that, please do so? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 23:05, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- There’s a
mode="slideshow"
for galleries, and I think mw.GallerySlideshow could be called from Common.js or a default gadget to display the next image every few seconds. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:37, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

- Perhaps on an hourly basis, but please not on the basis of seconds! [I'm sometimes working on bandwidths near 20 kB/sec..., and besides, my carbon footprint is already large enough..] R. J. Mathar (talk) 08:22, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- I think the benefit of this would be that one could open the Main page and see many images rather than just one that is featured, which would make the page much more interesting and versatile to people's diverse interests. The two ways for that would be to click the arrows to see the next image or to leave the page and open and see the next image after a while (40 seconds maybe enough to read the caption) which would make people become aware of the arrow buttons which they may start to use a while thereafter.
- Nothing else is dynamic on the frontpage except if there is an animated gif as motd and it would get WMC more users, raise awareness of its high-quality contents, and get its contents more exposure. I don't know if it's possible to check for slow Internet connection and only load further images for not super slow bandwidth. Lots of websites have slideshows and I think it loads only a scaled down version, not the full resolution. The carbon footprint note is beside the point, it would cause a bit more traffic but not extra emissions and in that regard is if anything a distraction, just like discussions about smartphone recharging are when a year worth of recharging is compensated by avoiding one <50 km car drive, that people still widely frequently engage in, and a miniscule percentage of people's spent monthly carbon budget.
- Is there a way to make the slideshow only show for nonslow Internet connections? Also it would need to be lazy loading so the next image is only loaded a few seconds before the next image is shown. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:38, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

Add space in caption of MOTD
Edit request A space should be added in the caption for today's MOTD, between "Spoon" and "an", because as of now they look like a singe word (Spoonan).
Should maybe have asked there, but probably no one would have noticed. — Alien333 (what I did & why I did it wrong) 14:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

MOTD caption
The caption says: Eqi glacier calving filmed in slow motion I suggest that the word "filmed" is superfluous and potentially wrong. The video plays in slow motion. Either way, one fix could be to omit that word. Schwede66 04:12, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- Done Thanks @Schwede66. I have omitted the word in English caption. It doesn't make any sense to me either. It also has cs, fr and uk translations currently available, but I don't know any of these languages, for locating this specific word and removing it. Anyways, thanks. signed, Aafi (talk) 04:48, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

Edit request
I will make several edit requests in this thread (separately so they can be discussed individually).
1)
The page says Please use the search box at the top of this page or the links to the right. Feel free to subscribe to our syndicated feeds. but on mobile, which by now could well be how the majority of people land on this page by now, the links are not "on the right" but down.
Please change it so that it says "further down" on the mobile site (I think there already is something that does change the content depending on whether it's the mobile site) and link to that section with Template:Visible anchor (or something similar) so that the user can just jump to it to see what is meant.
Being able to jump to/highlight the section is very useful for people who find the page confusing and don't want to search around to find what is meant. I mean Content and the links to the right which should render as Content
and the links to the right
. I think the Content box is the most useful thing of the entire page and a bit buried by all the other tiles and texts. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:44, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- Could somebody implement this, it's been 21 days and this sentence is clearly false for mobile users which may well be the majority of the site's users by now. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:09, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- I think this could be done with Extension:MobileDetect by which one could put the words into <nomobile> and <mobileonly> tags. It doesn't seem to work on Commons and I don't know if there is an alternative way to show text depending on the viewmode (mobile or not). Alternatively, please simply change it to something like the links in the Content box (not specifying whether the tile is on the right or down). I think it would be best to highlight the box when clicking on that page section link and I don't know of a way to highlight the whole tile rather than only the header via Template:Visible anchor but that would be better than no highlighting at all because users may be confused what is being referred to. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:25, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- Could you instead rephrase this as "or the content links section on this page" and link to the relevant section?
- Generally I would discourage use of mobile only markup as my experience typically it is poorly implemented by templates.
- Layout is evolving and can vary across skins, font size and browser zoom. In Vector 2022 for example layout is also impacted by whether you have both side menus open. Jdlrobson (talk) 09:23, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- This would also be good and maybe better. If making the text responsive to which type of device is used one may "use media queries and the skin classes and fix the templatestyles" according to the latest comment in the VP/T thread but I don't know how well or even if that would currently work. A problem I noticed only after my 16 Aug comment is that it may be the case that it's referring to not only the Content box but also the "Highlights" tile on the right. So I think either the Content tile should be highlighted regardless as it seems to be a closer and more comprehensive fit to what is being referred to (and also I think the most useful thing in the Main page content especially for people looking to explore or search) or the two tiles be put into one div and highlighted at once.
- Alternatives would include merging the two tiles with highlighted media being directly above or below "By topic" of the tile and "Meet our photographers and Meet our illustrators" getting moved into the "Participating" tile. I think I would support that but it would be a larger undertaking than simply highlighting both tiles for now or the Content tile.
- Maybe I should rather make these edit requests at Template:Main Page Template (please let me know if either is clearly preferred). Prototyperspective (talk) 16:55, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks! However, you changed something else – this request referred to the part or the links to the right but you changed the search box at the top which on mobile also is at the top of the page.
- 2. On desktop those are not at the top but at the right of the page.
- 3. Since there are many things on the right and the user, especially new ones, may be confused what exactly is meant I above suggested to link to the tile(s) that is referred to. This could be done via the vanchor template (here linking to #Content or other methods. I'd suggest to simply use the vanchor template and maybe improve it later on. Like this:
Please use the search box at the top of this page or the links further down.
- then at
|Content=Content
that would be changed to|Content=Content
which enables jumping right to it with highlighting wherever it is on the page. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:37, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

Proposal to link featured galleries and Atlas of the World from Commons main page
There is a discussion here, and a proposal to vote here, to include a link to Wikimedia Commons Atlas of the World and from "Content -> By topic", at Commons main page. I propose a new topic, Maps, with the title linking to , and one link inside the new topic, for Atlas of the World.
Adding a link to featured galleries from main page has also been proposed (first there should be featured galleries, I think there aren't; the link should be in Highlights section, as is the link to featured pictures).
I'm including this proposals here as asked by JopkeB on Village Pump. MGeog2022 (talk) 18:30, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
