Gerd Leibrock

[edit]

I'm looking for Ged Leibrock personally - is he still alive ? Thanks Rolf Hofmann at Harburgproject Harburgproject (talk) 05:45, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If the person you are searching for, is identical to the identically-named user account User:Gerd Leibrock, you might contact him on his talkpage or by email (which seems to be activated). --Túrelio (talk) 08:20, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He hasn't edited in years though, and his domain gerd-leibrock-stuttgart.de (still listed here and elsewhere) has apparently expired. --Rosenzweig τ 14:00, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed with 1900-images

[edit]

Hello! I create a Wiki-version of an encyclopaedia based on a book I transcribed and the images for which I scanned from an original copy of the book. Due to the scope of the image requirements (ca. 1900 images, 983.5 MB) I need some help concerning questions about meta data, categorization, file naming, and the upload process, as well. I put together (hopefully) all relevant information on my user page (User:CalRis25) and marked open questions in red. I tried to answer as many questions as possible based on the Help-pages, but could use some help with the rest. Due to the large number of images every error would propagate 1900 times. I would like to avoid that. You can answer here or on the Talk-page of my user page. Thank you in advance for your help. CalRis25 (talk) 12:47, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry that nobody seems to have answered. There are some tools that you might want to use, and people experienced with such tasks – it seems they don't read this page. You may have better luck at Commons:Village Pump. You could also take a look at Commons:Guide to batch uploading for some instructions. You might want to start by uploading a few images and ask for comments on them, to have a better chance to get everything right for the mass upload. –LPfi (talk) 09:26, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, LPfi, for your answer. I am currently reading up about OpenRefine, which seems to be the right tool for this job. I will do as you suggest, and make a sample image-upload and ask for comments. Bye. CalRis25 (talk) 08:04, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello everyone

[edit]

I don't understand the copyright rules for uploading images here. Could someone explain it to me? Baginda 480 (talk) 12:14, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Baginda 480: its hard to know where to start, because we have to deal at times with the copyright laws of every language in the world, which as you can imagine is very complicated and there are many pages devoted to different aspects of that. So, the following will be just a brief summary. If you have a specific case in mind, someone can probably give a more specific answer:
  1. Because our servers are located in the United States, Commons must abide by U.S. copyright law.
  2. If a given work is either (a) unpublished and from outside the U.S. or (b) first published outside the U.S. without simultaneous publication in the U.S. (legally, publication within 30 days), then we also abide by the copyright laws of that "country of origin."
  3. Every file on Commons must be either in the public domain (free from copyright) or free-licensed both in the U.S. and in its country of origin.
    • Files may be free from copyright for any of a number of reasons, and laws vary from country to country. For example, in most countries of the European Union, and many others, a photo loses copyright 70 years after the death of the photographer (more precisely, at the start of the next calendar year after that); in the U.S., that is different, and more complicated, but typically a photo loses copyright 95 years after first publication. Copyrights are typically inherited upon death; in some countries, including the U.S., they may also be transferred by written contract even within the life of the initial copyright-holder.
    • For our purposes, a "free" license means (a) anyone can use it as long as they conform to the license terms, including commercially (e.g. on a postcard, or in a book for sale) and (b) derivative works are permitted. Typical free licenses are {{Cc-by-4.0}} and {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. Only the copyright-holder can grant this license.
    • It is fine for the rationale for being free of copyright to be different in the country of origin than it is in the U.S. For example, we could have an image that is old enough that its copyright has lapsed in a country of origin with a relatively short term of copyright, and too simple to be copyrighted in the U.S.
If you have a specific question that isn't answered there, please ask it. Jmabel ! talk 16:38, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the detailed explanation about the copyright rules. I have a specific case I need help with. Recently, an image I uploaded, titled "File:Mahathir Mohamad and Siti Hasmah.jpg," was proposed for deletion due to copyright concerns.
Based on the rules you provided, could someone explain what specific steps I need to take to ensure this image complies with Commons' copyright requirements? Here is the information I have about the image:
  1. The image was originally posted on Flickr with version 1.0 of the Creative Commons Public Domain Mark.
  2. I need to provide a specific reason why this image is in the public domain.
Could someone guide me on how to address these points correctly to avoid deletion?
Thank you for your assistance! Baginda 480 (talk) 17:04, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The 1950s and earlier photos are OK. The 1960s one might still be copyrighted in the US. The 1976 and 1982 photos will probably need to be deleted since the Flickr uploader doesn't seem like the photographer to me and those are not public domain photos. Abzeronow (talk) 17:51, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Have another also

Clarifying Abzeronow's "the Flickr uploader doesn't seem like the photographer" he is saying that the Flickr account in question is one that we don't consider reliable for its own copyright determinations, so we are basically on our own for these. Either we can determine a PD rationale on our own, or we can't (and in the latter case we can't keep them, though we might be able to mark some of these for undeletion at a specific future date). - Jmabel ! talk 02:46, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Abzeronow, why would you say these would not have had their U.S. rights restored by the URAA in 1996? Also, are you presuming some particular publication date? I can see a lot of different scenarios related to that publication date. I'm not sure any of these are actually OK for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 02:50, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
COM:Malaysia has a section on the previous copyright law, which states "Because the 1987 extension was not retroactive, works made by authors who died before 1962 are in the public domain in both Malaysia and the US according to URAA, as well as anonymous, cinematographic, photographic, sound recording, broadcast, or corporate works published prior to 1962." The 1950s photographs look like they're prints and I had thought they would have been published before 1962. Abzeronow (talk) 15:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can the images from this Japanese government website be uploaded, or are they also protected by copyright?
https://www.my.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_ja/newinfo_13092019.html Baginda 480 (talk) 03:36, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Baginda 480 It explicitly mentions a copyright and gives no indication of a free license. Why do you think they might be PD or free-licensed? - Jmabel ! talk 03:56, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not very clear about the copyright rules, so I wanted to ask. Thanks for the explanation. Baginda 480 (talk) 03:58, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: I would like to remind you that you overlook a key point. If you take a closer look, there is a link named "法的事項" (Legal Matters) at the bottom of that page, which links to the standard GJSTU-2.0 permission page. Based on that the files are licensed under {{GJSTU-2.0}} and therefore permissible on Commons. Remember it is perfectly fine to assert copyright while licensing your work under a free license.
Also notify @Baginda 480: .廣九直通車 (talk) 08:03, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@廣九直通車: I didn't say they were not free-licensed. Not reading Japanese, I asked why Baginda 480 thought they were free-licensed (since the above remarks had given no indication). If it is as simple as what you just said then, fine, use the license overtly granted. - Jmabel ! talk 17:28, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

About a year ago, I was interested in uploading images used on the https://fkzeljeznicar.ba/ webpage. I got in contact with the main author of the page and he confirmed that the content can freely be used. I explicitly asked about Wikipedia/media. However, experienced Wikimedia users told me that I could not use the images as the football club/author did not publicly confirm this on the webpage. Recently however, I believe that this information has been uploaded at the very bottom of the page. Basically, it says that "Documents, data and information published on the fkzeljeznicar.ba domain can only be used for the individual needs of the user... All content published on the fkzeljeznicar.ba domain can be transferred with the obligatory indication of the source, author and link." If I am not mistaken, and please do correct me if I am wrong, I believe that the images can be redistributed on, among other sites, Wikipedia? My rationale is that images are visual content. I am aware that an exact license by the author has not been mentioned, but even so I do hope that the last line of the text is enough of a public approval by the author. Bakir123 (talk) 20:40, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unless I am very mistaken, "se mogu koristiti samo za individualne potrebe korisnika" means it's OK to do things like print yourself a copy, but it is absolutely not a license for (1) commercial use and (2) publishing derivative works, both of which are required by COM:L. - Jmabel ! talk 02:54, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose that is true, but I myself am still not too sure due to the last sentence saying that all the content can be transferred. What do they specifically mean by transfer then? My understanding was that the content can be transferred to other sites such as Wikimedia for instance. Also, they say that documents, data and information can be used solely for personal use. Images can't be classified as documents as the two are different types of digital media. Neither are they data or information unless I am making a mistake. On the other hand, they are content. So the only problem here is what exactly do they mean by transfer. Bakir123 (talk) 08:08, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter. Nothing here amounts to a sufficiently free license for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 03:57, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gamesplaystory2: I cannot parse that question, and I'm a native English speaker. Google finds no reference to an "inat Sob license". If there is some other language you speak better than English, could you please re-ask in that language? If not, would you please try to word this more carefully? - Jmabel ! talk 04:02, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gamesplaystory2: To prevent misunderstandings, you can mention on your inaturalist user profile that you are user Gamesplaystory2 on Wikimedia. And, to make it easier to find, you can also mention your inaturalist account name on your Commons user page. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:12, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List of Projects on the main page

[edit]

There is a lovely list of Wiki type projects on the main page on the left side. There is a very large Wiki project called WikiTree that has exploded in the last couple years. It is a genealogy project and I would like to see it listed. You can find it here: https://www.wikitree.com/. Thank you! Rogers-27419 (talk) 18:57, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, Wikitree is not a WMF project like the sites listed on the main page. Abzeronow (talk) 19:04, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, so I just asked how to get it included - will it automatically be added to the project list once it does? Rogers-27419 (talk) 20:18, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the project becomes a WMF project, you could make a proposal at Commons:Village pump/Proposals asking that it be included on the main page's "Sister Projects" section. Consigned (talk) 20:44, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading photos of artwork and architecture of a recently dead relative

[edit]

Can I upload photographs of monuments, buildings, houses and sculptures of work my father designed and produced between 1960 and 2010? The pictures were taken by him or myself. The old black and White pictures where scanned by myself. Some are part of 2 books that were printed in the last 15 years; one about his sculpture work and the other about his architecture production. He died last week and we need these images to illustrate his Wikipedia profile, that is being written by a third party. I guess I'm the copyright-holder of the pictures I took. What about the pictures he took and I scanned? Juan Lorenzo Barragán (talk) 00:29, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Juan Lorenzo Barragán: If you are the heir to his intellectual property, this is OK. The relevant form of license wherever it is his work rather than your own is (for example) {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} rather than {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. If it is your photo of his copyrighted three-dimensional work, you might want to use {{Art Photo}} which lets you distinguish the artwork license (e.g. {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}) from the photo license (e.g. {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}.
If the photos in question are already online elsewhere, you'll need to go through COM:VRT. You'll definitely need to do that for the ones in a book. - Jmabel ! talk 03:31, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Re-atributing edits from IP to username?

[edit]

I didn't notice I was not logged in and made some edits. Is it possible to hide the IP address and use my username instead? I can prove these are mine because no one other used this IP on any wiki and I added the images I edited to Polish Wikipedia under my username Spageektti (talk) 00:41, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Spageektti: No technical way to give credit to your username, but it is possible to suppress the IP address, if you like. If you'd rather not indicate so publicly what you want suppressed, you can email me what was the IP address and the timeframe, and I can suppress the IP address on these. - Jmabel ! talk 03:35, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"File source is not properly indicated" problem

[edit]

I have met a problem relating these two files:

File source is not properly indicated: [:File:Fraternitas Selonijas vairogs un cirķelis.png]]

File source is not properly indicated: File:Fraternitas lettonia zirkel and shield.png

User talk:Vladusty

These logos were created by me based on the visual elements and information available on the official website of Fraternitas Selonija / Fraternitas Lettonia. The design is my original work but reflects the imagery associated with these organizations as publicly displayed on their respective websites.

(https://www.selonija.lv/ and https://lettonia.lv/).

How should I indicate the source properly in this situation? Vladusty (talk) 16:23, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Convenience links File:Fraternitas Selonijas vairogs un cirķelis.png, File:Fraternitas lettonia zirkel and shield.png. - Jmabel ! talk 17:53, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Vladusty: The shields on the left are below the threshold of originality in pretty much any country, so it would be all about those symbols on the right. When do those symbols originally date from? Also, if they are more "in the style of" than faithful copies, why do you believe they are in scope? - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The symbols on the right are Zirkels
Zirkel is a monogram used in European student societies in countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia (Studentenverbindungen).
en:Zirkel (Studentenverbindung)
These Zirkel symbols were made in 1880 (for "Selonija") and in 1882 (for "Lettonia").
I believe that these symbols don't have copyright and they can be freely used in Wikipedia. Vladusty (talk) 18:36, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Εὐθυμένης: can you untag them? Enhancing999 (talk) 19:12, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Enhancing999: I just untagged both of the files in question. At the same time, I also pointed out the possibility of using the VRT process to the user. However, I'm still a bit unsure if he's linked or not to the two organizations, in which case, if he's not that is, there wasn't really any point for me to mention that. 😕 🏺ⲈⲨⲐⲨⲘⲈⲚⲎⲊ🏛️ ⲱⲑⲏⲥⲁⲧⲉ 19:31, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If it's a mix of things that old (1880s) and things that are below the threshold of originality, then there is certainly no copyright issue. I am not making any judgement either way on a scope issue. - Jmabel ! talk 22:50, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons just hosts content; it's not the copyright holder of such content. Moreover, from a copyright standpoint, public domain content is by definition content that is either no longer or was never eligible for copyright protection; so, there's no copyright to infringe upon. However, there might be other non-copyright related concerns in place that could possibly affect your reuse of the content; so, you probably should check your company's in-house policy (assuming you're working for a company) regarding such things or ask someone specializing in intellectual property/trademark law for input if you really want to be sure. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:24, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And if you are skimping on credits, be very sure to stick to public domain. If you use copyrighted material that is under a CC license such as CC-BY-SA without crediting it, that is exactly as if you had used any other copyrighted material without licensing it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What license to use

[edit]

I've found an image here [1] which I want to upload, it says it can be used, shared, copied and distributed free of charge, for credit. I've never uploaded an image before is that image ok to upload and what license would it come under? Thanks Spiderpig662 (talk) 15:56, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Spiderpig662: sure looks old enough that I'd expect that is in the public domain. Do they not give any information about its provenance? - Jmabel ! talk 19:41, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: it says it was taken in 1886/1887 in Bergen. --Spiderpig662 (talk) 20:25, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Spiderpig662: Almost certainly PD, though there are weird edge cases. Is the photographer known (and is their death date known)? Do we have a known first date of publication? - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: The photographer isn't known and I'm not sure of first date of publication. --Spiderpig662 (talk) 21:03, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Spiderpig662: The Norway side is easy, because publication date doesn't matter: {{PD-anon-70}}.
The U.S. side is tricky. Mercifully, URAA shouldn't come into play, because it was already PD in Norway in 1996.
  • If it was first published anywhere before 1929, it's {{PD-US-expired}}.
  • If it was first published outside the U.S. 1929 through 28 February 1989 inclusive, and didn't conform to U.S. formalities, it's {{PD-1996}}, and if that was 1929-1964 it would have to have conformed to U.S. formalities including copyright renewal (very unlikely), so it would also almost certainly be {{PD-1996}}.
  • Also, if it was first published 2003 or later, then {{PD-old-70}} covers the U.S.
So the ugly cases are:
  • first published (anywhere) 1929 - 28 February 1989 and conformed to U.S. formalities (that would give it 95 years in the U.S. from publication date)
  • first published (anywhere) 1 March 1989 through 2002 (that would give it 95 years in the U.S. from publication date)
I'd consider that first ugly case very unlikely, so if this was first published on or before 28 February 1989, or on or after 1 January 2003, you should be good on one or another basis. Sadly, if it was first published in that ~14-year window, it will be copyrighted in the U.S. for a long time.
Yeah, it's very weird and very convoluted because we lack publication info. You might want to take this to Commons:Village pump/Copyright and see if someone more expert has thoughts; if you do, make sure either to copy-paste my analysis or to use a permalink and link this thread as the start of your discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 21:39, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Share Alike"

[edit]

When the image I use is under the "Share Alike" clause, "If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same or compatible license as the original", am I expected to add the image to Wikimedia Commons? I have done so in the past but y'all appear to have removed it. I don't mind that you did; I just want to be in compliance with the rules. Tkthrasher (talk) 22:06, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tkthrasher: The share-alike clause means that if you publish your work somewhere, then you must offer it under the same or compatible license as the original. It does not force you to upload it anywhere in particular, or even to publish it at all. So, no, you are not expected to upload your work to Commons unless you want to and you think it is in scope for Commons. The account Tkthrasher never uploaded anything to Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:32, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, "share-alike" applies only to what derives from that particular image (or other work). If (for example) you retouch an image and use it in a book, your retouched image must offer the same "viral" license, but the book does not need to. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

NoFoP-Morocco

[edit]

Hello,

these photos were deleted on the grounds that Morocco does not have the freedom to take photos of buildings on public streets (NoFoP), but I would like to understand the following, please:

- Can I re-upload the photos and change the type of license (Commercial license)? Or is it forbidden?

- If it is forbidden, why don't you delete thousands of photos of Moroccan buildings on public streets on Wikimedia Common?

Thank you Mounir Neddi (talk) 00:40, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We don't host images that cannot be used commercially (and it is not up to you to choose licence on works of others). Some do slip through, but they are deleted when found.
However, for the copyright law of Morocco to require permission from the architect, the architecture must be the main subject of the photo (which is not the case in many cityscape photos) and it must be special enough to be considered a "work" under copyright law. (Similarly with signs etc.)

Batch upload limits with OpenRefine

Using partliemntarch and freely available data, I have created over 1388 .svg files representing municipal chambers of medium and major cities Brazilian (more than 100k citizens) for 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 elections. I wish to upload them to Commons so they may be used on articles onn portuguese Wikipedia about for their respective elections (example use in an article). I have experimented with using the OpenRefine tool to perform the batch upload of the images (see sample upload here). My questions are:

  • is there a rate limit to the rate of files I can upload at a time? If so, would OpenRefine take this rate into account or should I separate the files in smaller batches myself?
  • to perform this upload would I need a bot account or can it be done from my regular user account?

Nudity policy

[edit]

Not sure if this is the right place for this question but I’ll see. I was looking through images of nudists and have a question. A few of these (I can link examples if they are needed) include children. I am not prudish when it comes to nudity and know Wikimedia can include this type of content but it feels iffy when it comes to children. None of what I’ve seen seems to meet US law’s definition of harmful media though which requires for example “lascivious exhibition of the anus, genitals, or pubic area of any person;”. Should I propose these for deletion? Has this topic been addressed before? Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans (talk) 02:02, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans: If you believe the material in question actually could raise legal issues in the U.S., then do not link it here, which is liable to draw in more viewers before it can be removed. @Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans: Bear in mind that many people have strong views on the topics of nudity and sexuality. Therefore, it is almost certain that an image you have doubts about has already been scrutinised. However, if such an image was recently uploaded, uploaded by a new account or a single-topic account, if it is not categorised in the relevant categories, if the name of the image and its description do not indicate the content, then it is likely that it has slipped through the checks so far, and then you should report it to the above email address. • I'm not completely sure I understand your question (we don't usually talk about "copyright categories"), but you'll need to tag it with {{PD-CAGov}} for the design. Insofar as your own work is copyrightable, you can choose any acceptable free license; the most common are {{Cc-zero}}, {{Cc-by-4.0}}, and {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. These are quite different from one another, and licensing is irrevocable, so if you are not already familiar with these licenses you should familiarize yourself before choosing. - Jmabel ! talk 16:55, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to categorize a video where the videographer makes a full turn during the recording?

I made this selfie video some years ago. Apart from the wrong name (actually mirrors at four walls, not three), I deem it appropriate to have it in a category where the "one full turn during video" character is accounted for. There are some categories with "360 degrees" in the name, but they seem all to be for panoramic views, meaning the seen image already covers the full 360 degrees from left to right border. A majority of the content here is protected by copyright. See COMM:LICENSE for various acceptable licenses. —Justin (koavf)TCM 11:09, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear, "Wikimedia" generally refers to the Wikimedia Foundation or the broader Wikimedia movement, "Wikipedia" is a collection of 300+ encyclopedias written in many languages, "MediaWiki" is the software that is used on these wikis, "wikis" are collecctions of interlinked documents that can be edited by several users, and this site is "Wikimedia Commons", which is one of the 800+ wikis that are built by various Wikimedians and whose hosting and trademarks are controlled by the Wikimedia Foundation. —Justin (koavf)TCM 11:11, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The short answer is "no". Assuming you are talking about Wikimedia Commons, the licensing status of each image is indicated on the respective file page.
Everything here should be either free-licensed or in the public domain both in its "home" country and in the U.S. Some of what is here on a pure "public domain" basis might still be in copyright in some other country, so be careful if you are not either in the U.S. or in the country of origin for the file. "Free licenses" vary a great deal. CC-0 is by no means the most common. A lot more common are CC-BY and CC-BY-SA licenses, which require you to give an attribution, usually to the photographer in question. If you have a specific file where you are trying to understand the licensing, feel free to ask. - Jmabel ! talk 22:56, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Typically, someone who uploads a piece of media can ask for it to be deleted with no more justification within a brief period of time. Different images have different licenses, and so the requirements differ. Js Trent, it sounds like you are describing a CC-BY-SA license of some sort.
  • You must link to the specific license (which would mean having a specific version number for the license, which I can't even guess from what you wrote here). Online, that should certainly be a live link to a URL.
  • You must give "appropriate credit". If the file page specifies a particular attribution use, that. Otherwise, it will typically be something like "Wikimedia Commons user such-and-such". If you say what file you are talking about I can give you a specific answer.
I could be much more specific if you would say exactly what file you are talking about, rather than just quote part of the license summary. - Jmabel ! talk 19:08, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel I'm grateful for the correction. It seems counter-intuitive, though, that the cite link does not do the job one might expect it to. Perhaps Commons needs a menu link to "Create Attribution"? 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 22:26, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Timtrent: That would be the "Use this file" link. Yes, it would be much clearer if they were near one another; not under my control. - Jmabel ! talk 22:34, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel Thank you. Took me ages to find that link, hiding in plain sight! The wording of that link is not exactly obvious, until, of course, it is.
My apologies @Js Trent for misleading you in good faith! 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 22:57, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Logo de TotalEnergies

[edit]

- Jmabel ! talk 19:20, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An image of a BART train during the last run event on 20 April 2024

I uploaded the image on Wikimedia Commons a few days after the event on April 20. However, I found a lot of similarities of this image, such as different people posting this on X. I also posted this image, which is the same as the image on Wikimedia Commons. Both versions were taken by me.

In the meantime, I searched this image on Google Lens and the classic Google Image search. None of the images from Commons came up on these searches like the one on the right. This image was uploaded as CC0, and the other image is CC-BY-SA 4.0. When I searched "legacy BART trains" or the BART train last run event, I did not find any images of that kind on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons; it shows images taken from other people on social media platforms and YouTube.

After searching BART trains filtered from images from Commons in Google Images, a few images from 2023 or later showed up. Unfortunately, some images do not have a "licensable" tag, and some images contained the text "Images may be subject to copyright." Images of BART trains taken after April 2024 in Wikimedia Commons were not shown when I searched Google Images of it. I don't know why some images from Wikimedia Commons did not show up on Google Lens or Google Image search. Evan0512 (talk) 19:13, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Evan0512: What help are you requesting? We have no control over how quickly Google Lens indexes our content. - Jmabel ! talk 00:00, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I thought some Wikimedia Commons images were found on Google Images. I mean about specific images on Wikimedia Commons that found no results of matching images on Google Images and Google Lens, like TinEye. I requested help because I was shocked when I tried to search Google about this image as seen above, which showed little or no results for Wikimedia but similar images elsewhere. When I click Google Lens tab of a specific image on Commons, it results in a low-resolution image displayed on Google Lens. Evan0512 (talk) 06:19, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Evan0512: I'm sorry, that doesn't clarify what you are asking someone here to do or say. As I said, we have no control over how quickly Google Lens indexes our content. - Jmabel ! talk 19:23, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

I would like to ask if anyone knows of any Malaysian government websites where photos of high-ranking officials (such as the Prime Minister) are available for free use? Recently, I've been uploading photos of Mahathir Mohamad, but they are all sourced from foreign websites (like the Indonesian or Japanese government websites), and none from Malaysia. Does anyone know of any Malaysian government website where such photos can be freely used? Baginda 480 (talk) 07:34, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why can't I replace a painting with a better version of it?

[edit]

I want to use this versionː https://www.flickr.com/photos/magika2000/5870187312

to replace this versionː File:Saint-Philipe at Sole Bay mg 0505.jpg

For some reason commons doesn't accept that. DavidDijkgraaf (talk) 12:32, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To overwrite files, you'd need to be an autopatroller or above. Your proposed version is visually different enough that it should be uploaded as a new file (but the Flickr copyfraud of "all rights reserved" might make upload difficult). Abzeronow (talk) 17:53, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not really difficult. The source of a PD image is irrelevant to our ability to accept it, though of course it should be documented.
Download to your computer, upload to Commons. Indicate the source, but ignore the copyfraud and just give an accurate PD license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Especially with artworks we shouldn't replace images, but always upload as a new version. 1. The source of the image is different, but the description is not changed when replacing. So we are actually falsifying data by replacing. 2. The older version from an older source might also be an older version of the artwork. Older in the sense of before a possible restoration. Again by replacing we would not only be falsifying the description, but also destroying actual information.
What is the hassle of just uploading a new image? None really.
You can also replace your new image where the other image has been used before.
If there is a wikidata-item for the artwork, you could just replace the image in wikidata. This way your "better" image will automatically be reused interwikiwise. Wuselig (talk) 20:56, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DavidDijkgraaf: Please upload the full-resolution (2133 × 1268) version of the file. --Geohakkeri (talk) 18:13, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Upload an image of 1938

[edit]

Hello :) .

I would like to upload to Commons an image of a Cuban film from 1938. I downloaded the image from a website. I think it should be ok to upload it due to Cuban copyright laws, but I want to be sure before I do it.

Thanks in advance. Nonickillo (talk) 18:36, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know when all of the principal creators of the film died? It could still be in copyright. Cuba is 50 PMA. Abzeronow (talk) 18:46, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that the director of the film died in 1992. But about the photographers I have no information. Nonickillo (talk) 18:58, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Then this film can only be uploaded here in 2043. You could see if your local Wikipedia would accept non-free media if you plan on using the image for an article. Abzeronow (talk) 19:10, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok @Abzeronow, got it :) . That's it, I want to use it to illustrate an article. I will try fair use in this case. Thank you very much for your help. Nonickillo (talk) 20:49, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Old version of file being displayed

[edit]

I recently uploaded a new version of Anthony Ciampi seated.jpg that is of better quality and is cropped and straightened. However, when I view the file, it continues to display the old version. When I try to re-upload the new version as either a new file or to overwrite the existing one, it says it is an exact duplicate of the current file. I've tried refreshing and null edits but no change. Any ideas what's going wrong? Ergo Sum 18:19, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ergo Sum: Probably just a caching issue on your end. - Jmabel ! talk 18:37, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discolored old photo

[edit]

The original color of the old photo is black and white, but it can become discolored overtime due to some reasons. This discoloration often takes on a yellow. Speaking of which, I discovered that there are two problems:

  1. Where should files about the discolored old photo be categorized? Category:Yellow photographs?
  2. The discolored old photo are no longer black and white, then should we still be placing the category "Black and white" photographs?--125.230.82.39 19:24, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For example, File:Chen Tian.png shows black and white, and File:Chen Xian-cha.jpg shows yellow.--125.230.82.39 19:28, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Need to recover our page

[edit]

Hello Mr./Miss, I'm Faisal from Batterlution Ltd, Shenzhen, China. Last year our page was deleted, whose user ID and page name was " Batterluion ". My urge to the Wikipedia authority is to help us to get back our page. What procedure do we have to follow let guide us.

Thank you Faial Bin Ashab Overseas Technical Support Engineer at Batterlution Email: faisal@batterlution.com Phone/WhatsApp: +8613264910540 Batterlution (talk) 09:00, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For reference, I am unsure what page he is talking about but @Achim55 mentioned such an article here User_talk:Batterlution#Commons is not for Wikipedia articles. I have a bit of suspicion this might be self promotion, but we could import it to draftspace on wikipedia. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 09:18, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
